May 27, 2011 - PRLog -- There are two main characteristics seems define the masters of the art world. One is they are almost exclusively western, and the other is they are almost male, such as those well-know name, Van Gogh, Monet, Da Vinci, Rembrandt and so on. However, there is An exception to all of the above, Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907, the third of four daughters of Wilhelm Kahlo, a German Jew of Hungarian descent, and Matilde Calderon de Kahlo, a mestizo Mexican. The family lived in a house that the parents had built themselves in 1904, in Coyoacan, a suburb of Mexico City. Perhaps best known for her self-portraits, Frida paintings is remembered for its "pain and passion",and its intense, vibrant colors. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.

Because of an unfortunate traffic accident in 1925, Frida Kahlo turned away from her earlier career choice of medicine in order to devote herself to painting. The accident let her have lots of time on her hands since she was unable to move much. It was already at this time that portraits of herself became a main subject of hers. In her own words, she was the subject she knew best, and all the time she spend alone further increased the appeal of using the one subject who was always present – herself.

Her painting style was distinctly Mexican and even refered as folks art. Others referred to it is surrealist but whatever the label, it has today been widely recognized both inside and outside Mexico. The same with many prominent artists, her recognition was mostly after her death. It came first in Mexico in the 80s with the Neomexicanismo movement, and later also abroad with in the US with exhibitions and even an opera based on her. She is also today featured on the Mexican 500 peso note. Her painting Roots was sold at auction in 2006 for USD 5.6 million, a record amount for a Latin American work.

Frida had a stormy but passionate marriage with the prominent Mexican artist Diego Rivera. uffering her whole life from an ongoing list of complications arising from her childhood car accident, she nevertheless made her mark as an artist and as a woman. She took on what was a distinctively male profession, taught herself while she was not even able to move, and ended up succeeding and becoming the Latin American artist with the highest amount paid for her work. Kahlo suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best." She also stated, "I was born a bitch. I was born a painter."
