New Jersey builder of custom closets says there’s no need to stress about letting spring go by without getting any cleaning done

May 26, 2011 - PRLog -- If you missed spring cleaning, then have no worries as summer is a perfect time to get caught up on cleaning out your closet, said Norbert Twardoski, owner of The Closet Builder.

“Many of us let spring go by without getting any cleaning done. However, as summer provides the opportunity to get a new wardrobe, it's maybe a better period to get your storage in order,” Twardoski said. “With all your new purchases, you'll want a storage solution that will provide easy access to all you need to store.”

Twardoski recommended the following tips to help get your closet in order.

Make a plan for your closet organization
“Lay out everything you want to accomplish. Figure out what you're going to do with the clothes you no longer want. If you're going to install a storage system, make a diagram of what you want it to look like, and what will go where. Doing this before anything else will keep you focused, and you won't have to stress about the work you'll be undertaking.”

Don't go for the obvious
“It's great to have your own master bedroom closet, but think of what could be done if you and your wife used one to hang clothes, and used the other for shelving. The latter closet could contain all the folded clothes, shoes and accessories, making finding things easier for the both of you. Closet organization shouldn't be about what others do, but what works for you and your family.”

Use shelving space
“There are plenty of dividers on the market to create separate sections for clothing, shoes and accessories. Use the space over your hanging rack, and if you have room above your current shelf, then add another one instead of stacking higher. Items like shoes and handbags are easier to find on higher shelves as opposed to ones at eye level.”

Make sure you have proper closet lighting
“We sometimes neglect to change out burned out light bulbs, and instead of a well lit closet, we look in the dark. Items can get easily lost and remain not found. With proper lighting, however, items can be seen easier and the closet can be used more efficiently. Plus, natural sunlight can fade clothes.”

Put seasonal items together
“Have you whittled down your clothes and accessories, but still find yourself short on space? The rule of thumb is, ‘If you have too little space, you have too much stuff.’ You might have to resort to a seasonal system, switching out articles depending on what the weather's like. Easy ways to do this include put out-of-season clothes on a covered clothing rack or in flat storage boxes, and keeping this in the attic or basement.”

“Cleaning out your closet will reduce stress, as you'll be able to find what you want more quickly and efficiently,” Twardoski said. “Keeping good storage habits means you won't have to do this every season, so ensure proper storage order.”
