May 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Why is it that employers don't use employment contracts? Most jobs, unless you're applying for executive positions, do not come with the employment contract. I was surprised because I didn't know important an employment contract is.

I was talking to Trudy Ames with Progressive Business Solutions about the value of employment contracts. Ms. Ames informs me how important they are in establishing a good working relationship with employees as well as protecting both the business owners when employees turn out to be different than what we expected and the employees, ensuring they are getting at least Employment Standards.

Employers who work closely with their staff often think they don't need them. This is one of the most important times because it protects the friendship as well as the business relationship. Clear understandings, boundaries, working conditions, rates of pay, holidays, vacation pay and time are all critical elements in an employment contract that create both good communication and a good relationship. Protecting the business with trade secrets and privacy clauses are for the employer just as much as harassment language is protection and support for the employee.

I asked Trudy why aren't employers using employment contracts? She commented  "They're not easy to come by. Labor lawyers our expensive. Understanding employment standards in your province or state is hard enough without having to write a contract that provides you with the protection you want and your employees with the employment standards they are entitled to."

Ms. Ames shared with me that her background is contract negotiations. She spent five years negotiating employment contracts in  with the government.  Her comments, "I love my job. I love supporting people to become more successful. I have always been a problem solver and I get to be a part of solving many problems at the worksite through establishing contracts with businesses. There are also a number of tax benefits that are available specifically through an employment contract. Business owners love to learn about these."

Employment contracts do not fix everything or prevent anything that might happened in the workplace. They do however map out a foundation with boundaries and and offer an opportunity to begin developing good communication between management and staff. Followed by regular evaluations that support the continuation of feedback, questions getting answered, better clarity, ultimately better relationships develop.

Progressive business solutions provides template employment contracts that meet employment standards for each province or state. For $97 a business owner can download a PDF employment contract that they can use over and over in their workplace. There is no longer any reason not to have an employment contract that meets your provincial or state laws in your business. Trudy will also work with your business to create your own contract that allows for extra protections and benefits for your staff.
