Fort Lauderdale, FL – The Fort Lauderdale Law Firm of Farmer, Jaffe, Weissing, Edwards, Fistos & Lehrman warn auto accident victims and motorists, who may become pedestrians on busy highways or roadways, to pay special attention to safety because they do not have any protection if they are struck or hit by a passing vehicle.

A surprising number of motorists are seriously injured or killed in an accident that occurs while standing outside a disabled vehicle or while waiting for assistance from law enforcement. For the fourth time in recent months a motorist has exited his or her vehicle onto a busy South Florida highway and has been fatally struck by fast moving traffic.

According to an AAA Foundation (http://www.aaafoundation.org/resources/index.cfm?button=research)  Report (http://www.aaafoundation.org/resources/index.cfm?button=research), nearly one-third of all Interstate pedestrian fatalities involve an unintended pedestrian—someone who has a broken-down vehicle, been involved in a previous crash, or is walking or standing on the shoulder, but who probably never intended to set foot onto the Interstate

Here are some tips from Florida Highway Patrol’s (http://www.flhsmv.gov/fhp/index.html) Sgt. Mark Wysocky to keep you safe:
• When a car breaks down or is in a crash, motorist should pullover to the shoulder of the road if it’s safe to do so.
• It’s all right to move your car after a crash to a safe area.
• If you have to get out of your car, you can look for protection like a guardrail or a wall that you can stand behind.
• Do not stand directly behind your car (facing oncoming traffic). Stand in front of it or in the swale using the car for protection.
• If the vehicle can’t be driven, drivers should put on their flashers and stay inside their vehicle.
• Do not get out and walk in traffic or try to cross traffic or an interstate at any time unless circumstances mean you have to get away
