Dr. Bryan Fox Appointed Medical Director of Comprehensive Spine Care Services at Sentara Obici

May 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Suffolk, VA — Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center (SMOC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Bryan Fox as Medical Director for Sentara Obici’s Comprehensive Spine Care Services.

Dr. Fox took up his new post on Sunday, May 1, 2011. He is leading a task force of Sentara Obici health care professionals in a mission to establish procedures and protocol in the management of patients who receive spine care. The team’s goals include improving post surgical outcomes and overall patient satisfaction.

Dr. Fox is an expert in minimally invasive spine surgery techniques, having performed over a thousand spinal surgeries and taught several types of highly effective and innovative spine surgery procedures. His appointment is in addition to his full-time position as a surgeon at SMOC.

A graduate of The Ohio State University, Dr. Fox served in the U.S. Navy for 25 years, 17 as a physician and 8 as a naval aviator. Most recently Dr. Fox served as the chief of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA. As a Navy surgeon, he established a multidisciplinary spine center that has become the model for spinal care throughout the U.S. Military.

Additional positions Dr. Fox has held include NASA flight surgeon for space shuttle launches and recoveries and clinical assistant professor of surgery at B. Edward Herbert School of Medicine in Bethesda, MD.

Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Fox said: “I am excited about the opportunity to help bring state of the art, multi-disciplinary spine care to Obici Hospital. Our goal is to make Sentara Obici hospital a “destination hospital” for spine care throughout Hampton Roads.”

Dr. Fox joined the team at the Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center to establish an adult spinal surgery arm of the practice at Sentara Obici Hospital. His areas of specialty include decompression of spinal nerves, correction of complex spinal deformity, lumbar and cervical disc  replacement, and the treatment of spinal fractures, osteoporotic compression fractures, spinal complications, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, spinal tumors, spondylolisthesis and spondylosis.
