The Over My Shoulder Foundation Celebrates the Mentoring Achievements of the Students of John H. Reagan High School in Houston, TX
The Over My Shoulder Foundation is extremely excited about celebrating the accomplishments of John H. Reagan High School in Houston, TX on May 20th. Challenged by their multi media class teacher David Messina and the “Over My Shoulder Foundation” to design logos for a new social movement called “Mentorology”, the kids, many of whom come from poverty, gangs and broken homes truly stepped up. They designed over fifty well-conceived logos with passionate comments about what it meant to them to make a contribution to the important world of Mentoring. The assignment showed their resiliency and allowed them a sense of personal achievement that is often missing in their lives.
The assignment, inspired by David Messina, caught the attention of the students at Wakefield High School in Massachusetts. They are gearing up to make a short film on “Mentorology” as the science and art of creative mentoring.  David Messina with Over My Shoulder Foundation Creative Director, Russ Mezikofsky, and Wakefield High School teacher Jon Berecz will meet this summer to create a mentoring curriculum for the fall that will connect the two schools.  

Grammy winner Patti Austin, who co founded the Over My Shoulder Foundation with Dawn Carroll, will sponsor creative approaches to mentoring and will be visiting the school during her next Houston concert appearance.

Award winning stone designer, Dawn Carroll of Cumar, Inc. and CEO of The Over My Shoulder Foundation, will be displaying these logos in design show rooms in Boston and around the country. This will be part of the Mentorology conversation, Designing the Next Generation. Tee shirts and other merchandise will be designed and marketed with the Mentorology logos proudly displayed. All products will artistically point to the importance of mentoring across social strata and age groups as a source of personal and societal wellness.

The Over My Shoulder Foundation is partnering with corporations, media outlets and individuals to fund the initiatives and to spread awareness about creative approaches to mentoring from which anyone can participate and benefit. The foundation’s goal is to break down barriers that separate generations of people and cultures to bolster confidence and wipe out hopelessness in places like John H. Reagan High School and all around the world.

CEO and co-founder Dawn Carroll will be visiting the students all day on Friday May 20, 2011  with Monto Kumagai who is the creator of the BULA Card which uses technical wizardry to record visual and audio messages. These messages are stored into the Bula Card and signed by the participants and finally sent to President Obama to raise awareness for the need of more mentors.
