May 18, 2011 - PRLog -- (Tolleson, AZ)- Southwest Baking, a privately held commercial bakery that supplies bread dough to Subway stores in Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii and Southern California, announces today a partnership with Green Fuel Technologies, http://www.greenfuelsolar.com one of Arizona’s leading alternative energy companies, to install an elevated ground-mount solar system.

The system will produce an estimated 480,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually, effectively equivalent to reducing 17 million pounds of CO2 emissions over the next 25 years at Southwest Baking’s facility in Tolleson.

“The environmental emissions offset from the power generated by our solar system will be equal to planting 75 acres of trees in the City of Tolleson,” said Christian Belzunce, general manager of Southwest Baking. “We are extremely proud to be able to reduce our environmental impact in our community and on our planet.”

Southwest Baking’s commitment to sustainability is an extension of the SUBWAY® chain’s effort to make its restaurants and global operations more environmentally responsible. The SUBWAY® chain, working with its Independent Purchasing Cooperative (IPC), has made numerous strides to make their operations more sustainable, including a certified green cleaning program, paper packaging, napkins, and towels made with recycled fiber; restaurants with low flow faucets; as well as the construction of 10 certified Eco-Stores designed with an emphasis on energy efficiency and water conservation. Due to the commitment by SUBWAY®, and its distributors and suppliers such as Southwest Baking, in 2010 alone, the joint effort cut carbon emissions by 123,000 metric tons, reduced 21.8 million truck miles, and saved 3.6 million gallons of diesel fuel.

“Subway encourages all of their suppliers to be sensitive to the impact they have on the environment and to take all measures possible to reduce that impact within their operations while being supportive of the ‘green initiatives’ Subway is implementing in its thousands of stores,” said Elizabeth Stewart, Director Corporate Social Responsibility.

In addition to the ground-mounted solar system, Green Fuel Technologies is integrating solar photovoltaic panels into Southwest Baking’s new 24-space covered parking structure at the 28,000 square foot facility.

“Green Fuel Technologies’ greatest success is in engineering and constructing commercial solar systems that not only reduce energy costs, but also yield the highest return on investment for our commercial clients’ financial needs,” said John Casey, CEO of Green Fuel Technologies. “The investment in the solar power energy that will supply a large portion of Southwest Baking’s overall energy requirements is made possible by a combination of the benefits we enjoy from our sunny Arizona environment and incentives offered by our federal and state governments as well as SRP, our local utility company.”
