Brent Morel provided the White Sox with a badly needed wakeup call Tuesday night that they hope will carry over to a two-game series with the American League Central-leading Indians.

Morel hit his first home run since Oct. 1, 2010 — a three-run, game-tying shot in the fifth — and the Sox relied on other resources to seize a 4-3 victory over Texas.

Matt Harrison "That was the turning point in the game," said John Danks, who equaled a career high with six walks but avoided his seventh loss. "At that point I told myself I get a fresh start now."

Dallas McPherson, who was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte, delivered a pinch-hit single in the eighth that moved Gordon Beckham to third and Beckham scored the eventual winning run on reliever Cody Eppley's wild pitch.

McPherson's single was his first major league hit since Sept. 10, 2008, while playing for the Marlins.

"I liked his swing since spring training," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "In spring training, he did a very nice job for us. Those guys stick in your mind when you're going to make a (roster) move."

Sergio Santos pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save and it extended his scoreless streak to start a season to 20 innings — one shy of Dustin Hermanson's club mark in 2005.

The heroics of Morel and McPherson overshadowed the Sox's lack of spirit as Matt Harrison limited them to one hit over the first 4 2/3 innings, they grounded into two double play in the first two innings and they watched Alex Rios get picked off first with two outs in the seventh with a 2-0 count to Beckham.

"I think we were very flat because we didn't have good swings," Guillen said. "After (Morel's) home run, obviously, we came alive a little bit and things were different."

Guillen, however, could only chuckle after Morel failed to lay down a sacrifice bunt before McPherson came through with his single.

"That definitely was a great moment," McPherson said of his hit. "I'm still trying to remember. It was nice to get that one out of the way."

Danks also felt grateful as Guillen described his effort as "swimming against the current, but he makes it to the island."

"Any win is a good win, but we feel like we're starting to turn it around a little bit after the road trip," Danks said. "For us to win the way we did, that's big."

Especially with a two-game series beginning Wednesday against the Indians, who hold a 10-game lead over the Sox.

"We dug our hole," Matt Thornton said. "We made our bed. We have to start playing good ball."
