The state of Kerala is unique in many traditions from the rest of India.  The cultural advancement of Kerala took place on different lines from the ancient times. Matrilineal as a stem of social organization differentiate it from the neighbors and much of India. Kerala ranks highest on most off the Human development indices amongst Indian states.  The art forms like Kathakali, Mohiniyattom, etc, along with Kalaripayattu (Kerala's traditional martial art) are representative of Kerala. Even Hinduism practiced here is different s a result of assimilation with traditional Dravidian culture and matrilineal system. It is the only place in the world to practice ancient Vedic tantric rituals. Jews lived here for 2000 years before migrating to Israel in 1950s.

Being packed between Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, Kerala is an oasis of sweeping lush greenery.  Its uniqueness is that on the eastern side you have amazing mountain range Western Ghats ( Nilgiris) running almost throughout Kerala. It is in this hilly side the tourists would savor the verdant scenic beauty of hill stations like Munnar, wayanad and Ponmudi. The scenic beauty notwithstanding, the hills are home to numerous exotic varieties of flora and fauna. There are many wildlife sanctuaries as well spread across the length and breadth of Kerala.

On the opposite side of the Western Ghats, the backwaters and beaches are major attractions with the tourists. The hill stations and backwaters are integral parts of all tours to Kerala. It is not everywhere that you get beaches and mountains separated by so short a distance.  The Kerala backwaters run parallel to the coastline of Arabian Sea.  Much of Kerala is criss-crossed by the brackish canals. Kumarakom , Kollam and Alappuzha are some of the popular Kerala backwaters destinations. It is an amazing experience lazing in a houseboat with scenic places flitting before your eyes.
