LONDON – 18 May 2011 – The American diesel locomotive industry is buzzing with activity at a time when the demands for new locomotives have been nothing special but lull. The reason for the paradox is that the locomotive manufacturers and specialist powertrain suppliers are gearing up to adapt their product offerings to adhere to the upcoming tier 4 emission standards expected in 2015 for line hauls and switchers.

Besides the stringent EPA emission norms, the anticipation of growing rail projects in the commuter and high speed rail segments and the steady recovery of rail freight traffic have placed high interest amongst the stake holders on the growth prospects of the locomotive industry in North America.

However, much of the demand, being forecast post 2012, means locomotive manufacturers must empower their portfolio with advanced powertrain technologies to be able to capitalize on the demand for efficient EPA 2015 compliant locomotives from various freight and passenger railroads.

Frost & Sullivan will hold a complimentary web conference, entitled Advanced Powertrain Technologies – The North American Diesel Locomotive Industry, taking place on Thursday, 26th May 2011, at 3 p.m. BST. Vice President Growth Consulting, Franck Leveque, and Senior Research Analyst Surendar Chandrasekaran, will highlight growth prospects of locomotives by application and discuss key diesel powertrain technologies that are likely to penetrate the market as locomotive OEMs adapt their offerings to comply with 2012 and 2015 EPA emission standards.

To participate in this complimentary webinar, please email Katja Feick at katja.feick@frost.com with your full contact details. Upon receipt of the above information, a registration link will be e-mailed to you. You may also register to receive a recorded version of the briefing at anytime by submitting the aforementioned contact details.

The web conference includes locomotive demand snapshots, an emission reduction forecast plan by technology use, power-train demand snapshots by locomotive applications, a power train technology road map and a penetration forecast overview as well as hybrid locomotives.

"About 5,600 diesel powertrains will constitute the engine bay of 4,500 new locomotives in the next 7 years in North America,” says Chandrasekaran. “While the high horsepower (3,500
