May 16, 2011 - PRLog -- The Wartburg is pleased to announce two campus-wide initiatives for residents that will be coordinated by Americorps members.  The first initiative is a computer technology initiative for seniors.  The Americorps  Resource and Training Coordinator will help provide Wartburg residents access to computers for word processing, playing games and accessing news and entertainment on the internet or communicating via email or chat with loved ones.  The Technology and Training Coordinator will be responsible for training residents, maintaining and troubleshooting the computers and internet access and recruiting and training additional volunteers to work with residents.

The second Americorps position is an Arts Resource Coordinator.  This individual will coordinate expressive and creative arts on the campus, developing programs such as painting or music performance for residents.   They will also seek local volunteer artists willing to share their skills in order to expand the breadth of the program to meet the various interests of the residents.

Each Americorps member’s Resource Coordinator position requires 900 hours of service over the course of one year. In return, the Resource Coordinators will receive a stipend of $3500 and will also be eligible for a education award of over $2000 at the end of the successful completion of their terms through the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award.  Awards can be used to pay educational expenses at qualified institutions of higher education, for educational training, or to repay qualified student loans and can be used up to seven years after the term of service has ended. The education award can be passed down to children or grandchildren if the AmeriCorps member is 55 or older when they begin serving. In addition, these Coordinators can attend free training and development workshops during the course of their service term.

Ann Frey, Director of Volunteer Services, will be recruiting for these two Americorps spots.  She said, “These are great opportunities for people who are tech-savvy or have an artistic talent they would like to share. Both of these new initiatives on The Wartburg’s campus will make a difference in the lives of the older adults who live here.”

To qualify for these 20-hour per week positions through AmeriCorps, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. nationals or lawful permanent residents of the U.S. and at least 18 years of age.   “If you are a retiree who has enjoyed a lifelong interest  in drawing, painting, dance or music and would like to help seniors express themselves through art, this might be an opportunity for you.  A recent graduate looking to build a resume while making a difference might also find this to be an excellent way to spend a year learning and growing.”

The variety of service opportunities is almost unlimited. Members may tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, or help communities respond to disasters.
