Student from drug rehab freed from shadowed past; facing future

May 15, 2011 - PRLog -- A recent graduate of a nationally recognized drug rehab center, Narconon Louisiana Riverbend Retreat, described his experience as “freeing.”

“This program taught me a lot about what is going on in the world around me and how to deal with it,” he said before his recent graduation from the program.  “I am no longer focused on the things that have gone on in the past.”

Where is his focus directed now?  “I’m focused on what’s happening right now in present time.  I’m focused on how I can better myself in the future and keep myself from making the wrong decisions in the past that led me to using drugs.”

A counselor at Riverbend Retreat commented that shame and regret are two constant companions for addicts.  The past is the biggest hurdle to overcome in creating a new future.  

“Drug addicts have hurt a lot of people in their lives,” said the counselor, who has worked with the Riverbend Retreat in Louisiana for many years.  “They’ve hurt their friends and their family.  It’s a lot to deal with.  And what’s more, addicts have done a lot to hurt themselves.  Most addicts are always thinking about the past.”
