Scientists Discover MRSA on Bedbugs

May 12, 2011 - PRLog -- Today it was reported that Canadian scientists have discovered Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on bedbugs.  The research was conducted after doctors at a hospital noticed an increase in both bedbugs and MRSA infections.  Although the study was small, it raises concerns that the bedbugs which can cause people to scratch bits from the bugs could be introducing the potentially deadly MRSA bacteria into people’s bodies.

MRSA is a type of staph bacteria that is resistant to certain antibiotics called beta-lactams. These antibiotics include methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin, and amoxicillin.

“MRSA infections appear to be on the rise and the correlation to bedbugs is disturbing news,” reported Paul Cochrane, President of Cochrane and Associates, the company behind the IAQ Video Network.  “Most MRSA infections are skin infections, but more severe and potentially life-threatening MRSA infections are believed to be responsible for thousands of deaths each year in the United States.  News that bedbugs may be spreading the infections is something the public needs to be aware of as a possible threat to their health,” he continued
