By: Kimberly Bird Arturo Boada, who recently opened his new restaurant Arturo Boada Cuisine at 6510 Del Monte off Voss Road in Houston, will demonstrate three recipes showcasing homemade tomatoes at the Cornelius Voss Road nursery’s Top Tomato contest June 11. Boada’s Mediterranean and Continental cuisine has been served in different Houston restaurants for the past 20 years. “I can see Cornelius Nursery from my new eatery! This cooking demo might inspire gardeners to try new recipes with their home grown tomatoes,” said Boada. Manning a Weber Genesis Summit propane grill loaned to the event by neighboring Bering’s at 6102 Westheimer, Boada will prepare for sampling: Charred Tomato-Basil Soup, Spicy Tomato Salsa and Margarita Bowtie Pasta—three classic Arturo menu items. Eddie Russell, Voss Road manager of Cornelius Nursery, said the annual tomato contest is a celebration of the locally grown tomato with judging, prizes and for the first time this year, sampling of some gourmet tomato recipes. “Will you have the freshest and juiciest tomato crop by June 11?” asks Russell. Cornelius and Calloway’s Nursery experts say you don’t really need a vegetable garden to grow tomatoes. They also grow well in containers which provide the benefits of reduced weeds and fewer insects. Bring your tomato entries to any Cornelius Nursery on June 11, between 9 a.m. and 12 noon. At Cornelius Voss, Chef Arturo Boada will prepare three tomato recipes and serve samples between 11 a.m. and 12 Noon. First prize ($50 Gift Card) and second prize ($25 Gift Card) will be awarded at each store for two categories: Best Quality Tomato and Largest Tomato, but you must be present to win.
