May 11, 2011 - PRLog -- CHICAGO – Six-year-old author and youth advocate, LaNiyah Bailey, is speaking out against bullying the release of her first book, “Not FAT Because I Wanna Be,” detailing the struggle of being an overweight child with underlying medical issues.

LaNiyah Bailey is a kindergartener who, despite maintaining a healthy diet of vegetables, salads and grilled chicken, suffers from uncontrollable weight gain.  Bullied by her classmates for both the size of her stomach and her frequent constipation— caused by digestive problems —LaNiyah confined in her parents and doctor for help.

After many visits, LaNiyah’s doctor discovered an enlarged colon and immediately prescribed medication and an exercise program with a personal trainer.

Along with developing a healthier living style, LaNiyah also gained confidence and eventually decided to share her story through a children’s book.

“I just wish this book can help other kids like me... and I wish it can help people see that [even though] you might be big that you are not unhealthy or… a monster like people may make you feel,” said LaNiyah.

LaNiyah is working hard to take her message beyond the pages of her book.  She was featured on CNN’s Prime News, NBC’s “The Talk,” FOX’s “Good Day Chicago,” NPR’s “Tell Me More,” and in print and online magazines such as The Chicago Tribune, Splash News, BET.com, and on BlogTalkRadio.com.  She’s appeared at several festivals, including the “Stop Bullying Now” concert in Dallas, TX and the African-American Youth Day Festival in Chicago.

“I can identify with LaNiyah's story so, so much. And I hope her book helps to inspire other kids who are experiencing this particular pain, and lets other kids know that bullying is NEVER OK!,” says Afro-Bella.com.  LaNiyah has also found support for her cause on The Huffington Post, The LA Times, The Seattle Times, The Daily Mail and StarJones.com.

Not FAT Because I Wanna Be (April, 2011) is now available through Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com and the author’s website.  For more information about LaNiyah Bailey and her book, visit www.NotFatBecauseIWannaBe.com or email Info@NotFatBecauseIWannaBe.com.
