International Artist Emily Campbell Launches New Commercial Arm of Her Work

May 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Using digital technology Campbell creates magical worlds of rock pools and country meadows, which transform a room and capture the imagination of all who enter. For children it’s a story mat to explore and for adults a work of art in itself. Campbell’s work is symbolic of pure escapism, blurring the boundaries between a surreal world and the world of reality.

These floor pieces are an extension of her acclaimed work for galleries and public spaces.

Campbell’s interest lies in exploring the relationship between art and its positioning and place, questioning the relevance of four walls of the gallery in a digital age and she is fascinated by floor space which she views as a vastly underestimated area for art and its expression.

It’s a space where exterior meets interior, and where Campbell believes first impressions are made and subsequent behaviour is influenced in the space beyond.

She says: “Understanding art is not difficult it is simply about believing in what you see”.

Early works saw Campbell utilised the foyer space of a gallery, perceiving the entrance as a powerful opportunity to encourage a closer relationship and connection between the building and its inhabitants.

Here she created enormous, photographic images of parts of the human face – filling the gallery floor entrance with images of a wide-open mouth. The viewer often walked blindly over the work; only realising the piece existed at all from the view at the top of the stairs.

Campbell graduated from Camberwell School of Art with a first class degree and went on to gain an MA from Chelsea School of Art. Since 1990 she has worked on public commissions inspired directly from the community ranging from love letters in a city park to pieces for hospitals and health centres.
