Encapsulate the keyword by double quotes. The number of searches displayed is your competition. You would not want the competition to be in millions. Select a keyword for which there is not too much competition.

3) Write a Blog post: This step involves writing a great quality blog post using the keyword that you have selected. Write a blog posts in a natural language without trying to stuff your keyword in every sense. Keyword stuffing is frowned upon by Google and also lowers the quality of a post.

4) Spread the word: Now. That you have posted your article, the next step is to spread the word. One way is to submit your blog to bookmarking sites. If you blog post is of good quality and interesting you can expect a healthy flow of traffic form bookmarking sites. Also, make it easy for users to bookmark your posts. Add any of the free bookmarking plug-ins on your blog  

Once, all these steps have been taken care of, just wait and watch while Google crawls your blog post and ranks it. Time can vary depending on the competition and various other factors.
