“Having the world’s largest organic grocer at our doorstep here in Markham is very exciting and we are thrilled they have chosen Uptown Square as their new home,” says Times Group principal Saeid Aghaei. “Their commitment to organic farming and sustainable agriculture is an excellent fit with our plans for Uptown Square, which will be built in accordance with LEED® Standards and which is expected to be a popular destination for the residents of Markham, Richmond Hill and Unionville.”
With more than 300 stores in North America and the United Kingdom, Whole Foods Market features natural, organic foods that are free of artificial ingredients and hydrogenated fats. The store appeals to a variety of customers, from the health conscious to “serious foodies” with its wide range of organic fruits and vegetables; specialty items; high-quality meats and poultry; everyday pantry staples; and, sustainable seafood.
“We’ve been looking to expand our presence in Ontario for quite some time and Uptown Square offers everything we look for in a store location. We are excited to be an integral part of such an exciting new, environmentally friendly community,” comments Michael Bashaw, Midwest regional president, Whole Foods Market, noting that the natural setting of the nearby Rouge River Valley is also a great fit.
Scheduled to open mid-year 2012 – well in advance of the first phase of Uptown Markham residences – Whole Foods Market will feature 40,000 square feet of retail space. In addition to the supermarket, Uptown Square will house top tier restaurants, cafés, banks and boutiques.
