Local Young Artists to Attend Renowned Interlochen Arts Camp

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Eight-year-olds and best friends India McCary and Joycelyn Price of Crawfordville and Tallahassee, Florida were accepted and will attend Interlochen Arts Camp, Interlochen, Michigan, the world’s premier summer arts program for aspiring artists in third through twelfth grades. Both India and Joycelyn will study viola at the camp and are eager to enhance their skills. “I was so nervous waiting to hear if I was accepted. I’m glad they [Interlochen Arts Camp] want me to come,” McCary exclaims.
Price joins, “I want to go and have fun and learn more so I can come back and show my friends.”
These young protégés are students of Tallahassee’s Javacya Arts Conservatory located at the Smith-Williams Center. Under the tutelage of artistic Director, Patrice Minor-Floyd the students have studied violin since they were four years old and viola for one year. The two are the youngest Javacya students to attend Interlochen. “I’m so impressed with their ability to learn. To be so talented and disciplined at such an early age is exceptional. I know these two girls have what it takes to become professional musicians one day,” boasts Floyd.
Floyd is experienced with teaching gifted students. Javacya Arts Conservatory is a nonprofit collegiate preparatory music program dedicated to preparing the next generation of instrumentalists to reach their full potential. Javacya’s distinguished alumni include: Joshua Henderson, a professional violinist; Achia Floyd, founder of the highly-acclaimed Terpsichore Winds and professional flutist; Gallop Franklin, Florida A & M University’s student government president; and Ashanti “The Mad Violinist” Floyd, a professional violinist and producer for Atlantic Records.
Interlochen Arts Camp is part of the nonprofit Interlochen Center for the Arts, and recipient of the National Medal of Arts. The Center is the only organization in the world that brings together: a 2,500-student summer camp program; two 24-hour listener-supported public radio stations; more than 600 arts presentations annually by students; faculty and world-renowned guest artists; and a global alumni base spanning eight decades.
Among the distinguished Camp alumni are singer Norah Jones, singer Josh Groban, opera and concert soprano Jessye Norman, conductor Loren Maazel, jazz pianist Eldar, actor Anthony Rapp, and cartoonist Cathy Guisewite. Approximately ten percent of the nation’s professional orchestra musicians have roots at Interlochen and the alumni community has been awarded 89 Grammy Awards. In recent years, guest artists have included Joshua Bell, Olga Kern, Bob Dylan, Van Cliburn, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Guster, Lyle Lovett, Trace Adkins, Branford Marsalis, the Moody Blues and many more.
Pankcake breakfast fundraiser will be held June 11, 2011 at Applebee’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill, 1355 Apalachee Parkway, 8:00-10:00 a.m.
