May 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Running Springs, CA, May 4, 2011 — A new twist on an old idea is now available to booksellers and other retailers.   I Touched a…, an animal keepsake journal for children, has been listed with the book wholesaler, Ingram Book Company.

“Customers can now step up to the counter at Barnes & Noble and independent booksellers to order their copies in person,” explained Susan Wilcox, the journal’s author.  “The listing makes I Touched a… available to over 71,000 retail outlets.”

I Touched a… provides a way for kids to preserve the memories of some of childhood’s most joyful experiences: meeting new animal friends. Each page of the journal provides space for a 4”x6” photograph and a description of the experience. Children are asked to put into words what the animal looked and felt like, as well as the scientific name for their new animal friends.  The facing page provides additional space for original drawings, stories, or more description.

“The journal is designed to expand on kids’ powers of observation, one of the first steps in thinking like a scientist or an artist,” Wilcox continued. “We then ask them to put their observations into words, which helps to develop writing skills and self-expression.”

Besides its educational value, Wilcox sees the journal as “just plain fun” and an ideal keepsake gift for children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, siblings, and students.  The idea was inspired by her stepson who put together a similar journal for his two young children that turned meeting and petting new animals into a family project.

A companion website, http://www.newanimalfriends.com, celebrates such “touching” experiences by offering articles on how to safely approach and touch a variety of animals.  The first article offers advice on “How to Touch a Tarantula.”  Scheduled articles will cover snakes, gerbils, chipmunks, and other animals, as well as an article about what children should do if faced with a strange dog.

Since its April release, I Touched a… has been available through www.newanimalfriends.com as well as Amazon.  The recent listing with Ingram expands that distribution to booksellers and other retailers.
