Nets For Hope: Charity Benefit To Support Africa’s Children By Preventing Spread Of Malaria

For people in the United States, mosquitoes can be a minor summer annoyance but for thousands of African children, preventing mosquito bites can be the difference between life and death.

May 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Amenawon Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of rural Nigerians, is hosting Nets for Hope, to prevent malaria, the leading cause of death to children in Nigeria . Nets for Hope, will be held at the beautiful and historic Bohemian Caverns 2001 11th St. in Washington, D.C. on On May 14, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. The event will raise critically needed funds to purchase mosquito nets and prevent the spread of malaria, the leading cause of death for Nigerian children under five years old.

Nets for Hope will include light refreshments, live music, as well as a silent auction.  It will be hosted by Guy Lambert of The Big Tigger Morning Show on WPGC and also feature a performance by award-winning poet, recording artist, and TED Fellow Iyeoka and Rock by Funk Tribe.  Music will be provided by DJ Underdog with additional performances by Eme & Heteru, Jahiti Of Brown F.I.S.H. and more.

Directly benefiting families living in eight rural Nigerian villages, donations to Nets for Hope will be used to purchase and distribute mosquito nets and provide the education and training needed on their proper use. The Amenawon Foundation’s grassroots actions will help prevent the spread of one of the world’s most deadliest diseases and help save children’s lives. Malaria accounts for approximately 1 million deaths in Sub-Sahara Africa, 250 million illnesses, 60 percent of outpatient visits and a third of all hospitalizations in Nigeria, and is the leading cause of death for children under the age of five. The disease also contributes to 11 percent of the maternal mortality rate in Nigeria.

Mosquito nets are an effective way to prevent the spread of this deadly disease and have helped dramatically reduce the number of fatalities worldwide, but approximately 12 percent of families in Nigeria still do not have access to a net to protect themselves and their children. Therefore, the Amenawon Foundation hopes to join forces with other organizations and government agencies such as The Peace Corps, The Presidents Malaria Initiative (PMI) and USAID’s initiative to “Stomp out Malaria” in Africa by 2015.  With many organizations working on this initiative, we will bring a brighter future not only for Nigeria but the entire African continent.
