May 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Local families are invited to join the National Police Week Celebration with a one-day event at the Montgomery Mall on Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Montgomery Township police officers will conduct K-9 demos at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and have police vehicles on display. S.W.A.T team officers will also hold demonstrations. Parents can bring their children for free fingerprinting and a digital portrait to be kept on file. Children who have already been through the fingerprinting process are encouraged to participate again to become more comfortable talking to officers. Trained officers will be on hand taking appointments for car seat inspections. They will also be answering questions regarding child safety seats and using a car seat simulator as a visual aid when explaining proper car seat installation.

In addition, presentations about safe driving, traffic and highway safety, and summer safety tips will be going on throughout the day. Also, parents are encouraged to ask police officers questions regarding the issue of childhood bullying.

Costumed Star Wars characters from Garrison Carida, Darth Vader’s 501st legion, a charity-focused group led by volunteers who dress up like the famous characters, will be on-hand greeting children and families. The mall’s ToyZam store will be collecting toys and will have toys to purchase for donation to the organization. After the mall event, the characters will deliver the donated toys to children’s hospitals in the region.

A North Wales, Pa. pet adoption group, Home At Last, will have a table to distribute information about their organization. Home At Last is a group of volunteers whose goal is to save the lives of homeless dogs suffering in high-kill shelters, as well as owner-surrender dogs who need to be relocated due to unfortunate circumstances. No pets will be on site.
A spokesperson from the Montgomery Township Police Department will be available for media interviews.
