May 3, 2011 - PRLog -- A group of enterprising students from The College of Law Manchester have been recognised by the region’s leading financiers after making a virtual profit of £7,000 in a first of its kind share race challenge.
In just six months, 30 Graduate Diploma in Law students across seven teams each invested £100,000 in virtual cash into FTSE 100 companies on a dummy trading platform.
Winning team members; Gillian Forsyth, Gareth Parkinson, Jon Cherry and Lewis Falstein were rewarded for boosting their investment pot by 6.8% or nearly £7,000 by carefully choosing a combination of shares they felt would give them the greatest short term gains.
An investment discipline award was also presented to; Chris Mannion, David Jacobson, Ezra Luckock and Faye Thompson for their professional presentation and reporting procedures.
It’s the first time Cheshire based Xentum Wealth Management has joined forces with The College of Law Manchester and investment management company Quilter to devise a share race challenge aimed at giving students a realistic insight into the financial markets and the factors which influence share values and investment decisions.
College of Law lecturer, Kate Baldwin, and co founder of Xentum Wealth Management said: “This is the first challenge we have done with the students and from a commercial and educational perspective we’ve been really impressed with the students’ hunger to do well. They’ve benefited from practical input and guidance from some of the sharpest financial brains in the city’s business community.”
Richard Sneideris, Investment Manager at Quilter, added: “These students now have a far better understanding of the investment rationale behind shares, an insight into their potential risks and rewards and, in the wider context, the role that equities can play within an overall investment strategy. Considering they are novice investors, the return on their virtual investments has been impressive.”
The winning teams were presented with tickets for the Midsummer meeting at Chester Races at a special awards ceremony.
