By: Bobbi Greenberg George “Sonny” Williams, who passed away from ALS in 1996, was an active supporter of the ‘ALS Memorial Golf Tournament,’ Williams’ son, Jim Williams, continued his father’s legacy and changed the name of the tournament in 1999 to the ‘George Williams Memorial ALS Charity Golf Tournament.’ “I cannot think of another organization where 100 per cent of the employees volunteer to raise funds like Williams Moving & Storage does,” said ALS BC executive director, Wendy Toyer. The Williams family and the Williams Moving & Storage employees hold numerous fundraisers throughout the year, such as $1 million pennies for ALS, Slim A thon, etc., to support ALS. In 2009, the Williams family and all 350 employees of the company received ALS BC’s Roy Slater Volunteer of the Year Award for their volunteer contributions. The Myra Rosenfeld Volunteer Award recognizes outstanding contribution to the advancement of the mission and goals of the ALS Society of Canada by a volunteer at the national, provincial unit or chapter level. The award honours Myra Rosenfeld, a dedicated volunteer who died of ALS in 1990. ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease that causes the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the nerve cells die, people with ALS lose control of their muscles, which makes breathing, eating and even smiling almost impossible. Eighty per cent of those diagnosed will die within two to five years. The ALS Society of Canada, founded in 1977, is the only national voluntary health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS and support for those living with ALS. The Society funds research towards a cure for ALS, supports our provincial partners in the provision of quality care for those living with ALS, and provides information to build awareness about the disease. -30- For more information, please contact: Wendy Toyer Executive Director wendy@alsbc.ca Bobbi Greenberg Director of Communications ALS Society of Canada Tel: 1-800-267-4257 ext. 208 bg@als.ca End
