Popular Mattresses and Bedding Contain Carcinogens and Reproductive Toxins
New Book “Sleep Safe in a Toxic World” Recommends Organic Options
“Sleep Safe” author Walter Bader explains, “One of the most significant changes we can make to reduce exposure to environmental toxins and improve our overall health is to make modifications in the bedroom, where we spend over one-third of our lives.” According to Bader, the average conventional mattress contains more toxic chemicals than a 50-gallon drum of oil. Many memory foam and other mattresses contain carcinogens, neurotoxins, reproductive toxins, respiratory irritants, asthma triggers, skin irritants and nasal-passage irritants. People breathe in these toxic chemicals all night long, and human skin—which is often largely exposed while in bed—absorbs much of what it comes into contact with. As a result, chemicals in mattresses and bedding have been found at significant levels in human blood samples.
Bader was one of the first experts to discover chemical exposure can occur during sleeping hours due to out-gassing of chemical flame retardants, pesticides, and anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agents commonly used in the manufacture of mattresses and bedding. Bader's mission is to share this knowledge with the world. “Sleep Safe” is an updated version of Bader’s earlier book “Toxic Bedrooms” (2007), and is the culmination of his experience and wisdom gained from years of technical research and speaking with chemically sensitive consumers.
Organized as an educational and instructional guide, “Sleep Safe” also looks at the variety of toxic threats found throughout the home and explains how readers can choose safer, natural alternatives to help protect themselves and their families.
Actor/environmental activist Ed Begley, Jr., said of “Sleep Safe”, “Rarely do we get the opportunity to make our lives far less toxic with so little effort. With one simple action [choosing an organic mattress], we get to eliminate a toxic brew from one third of our time on this planet.” Healthy Child Healthy World Chief Communications Officer Janelle Sorensen commented, “Children spend over half their time in bed, one of the most important gifts you can give them is a safe and healthy one. Bader provides credible evidence that will change how you view where your child sleeps as well as answers for finding the safest options.” David Steinman, author of “Diet for a Poisoned Planet” and “The Safe Shopper’s Bible”, commented “’Sleep Safe’ reminds us of the health risks we face every day from environmental toxins and shocks us with their proximity.”
