April 25, 2011 - PRLog -- Miami - On Wednesday, April 27th, Women's Fund of MIami-Dade - the only grantmaking organization in Miami-Dade entirely dedicated to funding gender-specific programs – will host The Power of the Purse: Seeds of Change Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency Miami, 400 SE 2nd Ave. Power of the Purse is symbolic of our ability to profoundly impact women and girls in Miami by supporting gender-specific programs and raising awareness of the connection between poverty, low self-esteem, inadequate healthcare, job access, domestic violence, sexual assault…and being female.

Abigail Disney, named one of 150 Extraordinary Women Who Shake the World by Newsweek and The Daily Beast, will be the keynote speaker. Abigail has produced a number of documentaries focused on social themes. Her first film was the award-winning "Pray the Devil Back to Hell."  Her current project, "Women, War & Peace," is a bold new mini-series that intends to challenge the conventional wisdom that war and peace is a man's domain and to place women at the center of an urgent dialogue about conflict and security.  It will air on PBS in the fall of 2011.

Shannon Hori, Emmy Award winning co-anchor of CBS4's weekday newscasts will be the Power of the Purse Host. Shannon firmly believes in giving back to the community she lives in and contributes her time and energies to many of South Florida's organizations.

Additionally, we’re pleased  to announce Alex Sink, Former Florida Chief Financial Officer, will be attending the 2011 Miami-Dade Women’s Fund Luncheon, Power of the Purse. A respected Florida business leader, Alex Sink has long been a champion for small businesses in Florida, many of which are owned and operated by women.  Continuing her hard work to build Florida's economy, Alex has a number of cutting-edge ideas for expanding small businesses and generating job growth in Florida.

Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit Women’s Fund’s grantmaking, advocacy and community-building efforts that address the unmet needs of women and girls in Miami-Dade County.
