April 21, 2011 - PRLog -- Coming out of university is more of a challenge than in previous years what with recessionary constraints but how can we prepare our newest graduates for what to expect? Graduates whose job search began at the offset of the biggest banking crisis in 2008 are readily acknowledging what would have been best for them and how problems arose when embarking on a new role.

What has become obvious to graduates is that applying for a job just isn’t enough. What isn’t obvious is what is enough? Universities are now being encouraged to prepare their students with the knowledge and suitable expectations of what entry to the business world will be like in order to make the employment market more fluid and profitable. Things that weren’t specifically highlighted are now being brought to the forefront of graduates minds. For example, before internships were done but weren’t overly necessary whereas now it is actively encouraged to embark upon one during your degree and after. Although many degrees including, law, accountancy, medicine etc directly prepare you for a career, many associated degrees like humanities, arts etc don’t.

Taking a more pragmatic look at your degree and its skills is also being encouraged – work shops regarding how to use what you’ve learnt in a work environment are vital for graduates to be prepared for the new environment within which they wish to work.

Many universities have active programs that students can sign up to and obtain information and adivce about careeers. The University of Leeds for example runs workshops for CVs and career options so that students have all the information there is they want it.

Cambridge University go one step further with a dedicated careers support role who liases with companies on behalf of students to find out exactly what it is they need and want. This allows each student to be aptly prepared for what to expect from the real world.

The verdict, graduates must be more active in their career search before they leave university. From arranging experience/internships in the holidays to working on how their skills can be transferred to real life.
