April 20, 2011 - PRLog -- Head, lung and neck cancer are able to identify by the new “electronic nose” which found the chemical signals of cancer in the patient breath. Electric nose can distinguish between people with the disease and healthy individuals. The cancers which are often diagnosed late, by means of this device it could be useful for identifying patient‘s cancer, it is according to scientist believe.

It would take years of research to find if the breath test for cancer could be used in clinic according to a cancer charity.

The research was published in the British Journal of Cancer. About 80 volunteers took part in the research, 22 of these had various head-and-neck cancers, 24 had lung cancer and 36 were healthy.

The device was so called Nano Artificial NOSE (NA-NOSE), it is able to tell apart breath molecules from head and neck cancer patients and healthy individuals.

"There's an urgent need to develop new ways to detect head and neck cancer because diagnosis of the disease is complicated, requiring specialist examinations.” Lead researcher Professor Hossam Haick, from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, said:

Professor Hossam Haick said: “We’ve shown that a simple ‘breathe test’ can spot the ¬patterns of molecules which are found in head and neck patients in a small, early study.”

“We now need to test these results in larger studies to find if this could lead to a potential screening method for the ¬disease.” Professor Hossam Haick said.

In UK, around 8,700 people are diagnosed with head-and-neck cancer each year. This includes a range of different tumour types occurring in the tissues or organs in the head and neck, for example salivary glands and mucus membranes.

"Cancer Research UK is leading initiatives to improve early diagnosis of cancer; it's incredibly important to spot the disease as soon as possible when it is easier to treat successfully.” Dr Lesley Walker, Cancer Research UK's director of cancer information said.

"These interesting initial results show promise for the development of a breath test to detect head-and-neck cancers which are often diagnosed at an advanced stage.
