YMCA of the Rockies’ Estes Park Center Chosen To Host 2014 World Council of the World Alliance of YMCAs

ESTES PARK, Colo.- The Executive Committee of the World Alliance of YMCAs has announced their decision to hold the 18th World Council Meeting at YMCA of the Rockies’ Estes Park Center in 2014. In early April, Kent Meyer, President and CEO of YMCA of the Rockies, proudly shared the news with his staff saying “This will be a wonderful opportunity for us to bring the world to our YMCA.”

The World Council meets every four years and is the highest decision making body of the World Alliance of YMCAs, or WAY. According to WAY the World Council “Is responsible for setting the policies and direction of the World Alliance, electing its Officers and Executive Committee, evaluating the work of the last four years, and deliberating on priorities for the next quadrennium.” WAY is made up of YMCA Movements in 125 countries. The first World Council convened in 1855 with 99 delegates representing nine countries.

Today the YMCA has over 45 million members and can be found in 125 countries. WAY explains that “YMCAs work towards social justice and peace for young people and their communities, regardless of religion, race, gender, or culture.”

YMCA of the Rockies has two retreat-style properties in Northern Colorado, the Estes Park Center and Snow Mountain Ranch. The Estes Park Center began as a conference training ground for YMCA directors in 1907 and hosted the previous World Council gathering in 1981. More than 800 participants from around the world are expected to attend the event which will take place June 29 – July 5, 2014 and will include worship, training and support opportunities.
