April 24, 2011 - PRLog -- Are you an amputee and are interested in learning about the C-Leg?

Do you want to obtain a C-Leg for one of your patients?

1.) Introduction

This brief article on prostheses will discuss what a C-Leg is and where a person needs to go to get evaluated for one of these artificial limbs. We are here to help you, no matter where you live. This free information can be a turning point for those individuals that have lost their leg and are looking for a better way to walk around again.

2.) The C-Leg, Why Its Unique

The C-Leg is a prosthesis that more and more individuals are using today. It is manufactured by a company called, Otto Bock and it is unique in its design. This leg, unlike many prosthetic legs before it, has a microprocessor in the knee joint that monitors knee movement 50 times per second. The ultimate goal of this above knee prosthesis is to help people walk with a more secure, free flowing gait pattern along terrains that can vary. - The knee joint itself has a safety feature called "stumble recovery" that will not let the knee buckle if there is a sudden stop in ambulation, due to a surprise that the patient encounters when walking. This improves safety levels, while also increasing an individuals self-confidence when they walk.

3.) The Cost of The C-Leg

The best answer we can give anyone is that it all comes down to insurance coverage for the majority of individuals. Depending on the details of your policy, the C-Leg will be covered at varying amounts. Do not count on this leg costing five to ten thousand dollars (before insurance is brought into the equation). The knee joint which includes the microprocessor is more advanced than other legs that have come before it so the price will be higher than an average leg. However, you must check with your local, licensed prosthetist so they can review the benefits of your insurance plan. This way you can get an accurate price.

4.) Where To Get a C-Leg

Visit your local, licensed orthotic and prosthetic company. A prosthetist will evaluate you for this leg and will discuss if you are a proper candidate for the leg. These legs are not sold in stores, by any means.

*Note: This is health information. Medical advice on prostheses (artificial limbs) should come directly to you from a local, licensed prosthetist. These individuals are trained in the field of prosthetics and can provide you with the best information possible.
