April 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Vancouver, B.C. – Every pet person has had “that moment” when their furry, feathered or four legged pet gets hurt and they don’t know what to do. Lisa Wagner, Operations Director of Walks ‘N’ Wags Pet First Aid provides three points to keep in mind if your pet is injured.

1.     Pet first aid skills differ from human first aid skills. (Just because you took a first aid course at work, it doesn’t mean you will know what to do if an animal is injured.) It’s important to have your vet or other relevant animal health care provider take care of an injured pet.

2.     A pet’s physiology is different than that of a human (they are furry, stand on four legs, and have parts that we don’t have like tails, whiskers and foot pads) and they are prone to different injuries than people. This means we may not see or recognize the extent of their injuries immediately. It also helps to give your pet a regular inspection to make sure there aren’t any injuries hidden in their paws, under their fur, in their ears, etc.

3.     Pets react differently than people when they are injured so they must be approached and handled appropriately. While you may understand that you want to help them, a hurt animal doesn’t know that and may react by biting, scratching or clawing – driven by fear or pain.

Walks ‘N’ Wags Pet First Aid offers a recognized National Pet First Aid Certificate course for dog and cat professionals and pet owners. Their program includes a focus on preventative medicine and early detection of illness.

Lisa Wagner will be available for questions and further discussion at The Petnership Project Holistic Wellness Pet Show on April 30 and May 1, 2011.
