Geeks On Site: Myths And Facts About Cell Phones

There are many myths surrounding today’s technology, and probably most of them are connected to cell phones. In this article we will take some myths you have probably heard about, and break them down to final conclusion.

April 14, 2011 - PRLog -- For so many years we’ve been having doubts on certain things in technology, such as potentially dangerous cell phone radiation. Well, in this article we will dive into this subject and give you more concrete explanations, along with our opinion to some of these topics.

Myth or Fact 1: Cell phones can cause cancer and/or infertility
Still under debate. The assumption is that since you’re using hands-free, your phone is in your pocket where it can cause infertility. We are still not sure about this one for one good reason – cell phones have not been around long enough to prove or overrule this doubt. If you do spend hours and hours on your phone, it could cause some temperature increase, otherwise nothing else can be proven yet! If you’re not so convinced of these lines, you can always try to cut down on your cell phone usage and keep it away from your head and pockets!
Our opinion: There is not enough evidence to decide whether to laugh or to get worried about this claim.

Myth or Fact 2: Cell phones and airplanes
Even though this matter, like the myth before, is still highly debatable, there still has not been found enough proof to connect plane crashes with cell phones. It all started with that assumption, but due to researches (NASA and FAA, among other organizations), flight attendants today ask us to turn off all electrical devices just for precaution, we all know that phrase ‘better safe than sorry’, or for an even better reason – for people to pay attention to safety instructions. Moreover, we never think of what could happen if the takeoff didn’t go as planned. Could you imagine all those laptops flying around the plane during aborted liftoff? We would describe it as a very painful experience, and dangerous too.
Our opinion: Even though we could be almost 100% sure that using electrical devices during takeoff will not crash the plane, be good and listen to the flight attendants, their instructions could save your life!

Myth or Fact 3: Cell phones can cause gas station fires
As far as this one goes, it stays one of the myths and nothing can change that! This myth has its origins somewhere in the 90s when supposedly Shell issued a warning about cell phones causing fires at the pumps, but we assure you that nothing like that can actually happen. Well, the only explosion that could be connected to cell phones is the one of exploding battery, and that’s not really common either and could be possibly listed as another myth. Moreover, some years later Shell proclaimed that ‘report’ as bogus.
Our opinion: If you feel like killing some time by talking on your cell phone while on a gas station – go for it, just don’t lite a cigarette while you’re at it!

Myth or Fact 4: Cell phones can open up locked cars – 2 theories
Theory 1:
We would like to see this one coming true. If it hasn’t already, sooner or later locking our car keys inside the car could happen to us too. Next step is to call our parents, partners or friends to bring us our spare keys so that we could get into the car. Well, first theory says that, if this happens to you, it is sufficient to call the person that has our extra keys (remote) who will press the button on the remote keychain close to the cell phone’s microphone, while we should hold our cell phone close to the car doors, and click, it will unlock the door! We highly doubt this is the case. Even though there is a whole bunch of people saying that this works, let us give you some logical arguments that it isn’t so. One argument is that if it would be as easy as that, car theft would be much easier too. Another argument is that remote car keys don’t work by the same principle as cell phones, therefore cell phones can’t transmit key signal to unlock one’s car!
Our opinion: Even though some people say different, it is still a myth.
Theory 2:
This theory says that using applications on your iPhone you could access your car, lock it or unlock it for example, from anywhere in the world. This theory sounds more than real, because in this case, only your cell phone would be directly connected to your car and only you could access it.
Our opinion: Some months ago OnStar and General Motors released some applications into the Apple iTunes Application Store and the Android Market. One of the applications that you can purchase is the one we were writing about in Theory 2, and for now they are compatible only with 2011 Buick, GMC, Chevrolet, and Cadillac models. Therefore – Fact.

In the end we can only say: don’t believe everything you hear! We brought you some myths/facts about cell phones this time and we hope we helped you resolve your doubts. Keep reading us because we’ll be back with some more myth busting!
