April 13, 2011 - PRLog -- Tampa - As a part of an ongoing effort to address the issues that confront minority male students attending college, HCC is hosting a minority male summit on Friday, April 15, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Dale Mabry Campus.

Statistically, minority male students rank the lowest in terms of college persistence rates, and HCC has been leading a national discussion to tackle the issues that lead to this population’s disproportionate drop-out rates.  HCC students, as well as students from local area high schools, have been invited to the summit to hear from nationally recognized speakers including Dr. Khalil G. Muhammad, the newly appointed incoming director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City and a history professor at Indiana University.  The Schomburg Center, a part of the New York Public Library System, is considered one of the premier depositories in the world for African and African-American culture.

Other speakers include Victor Antonio whose journey has taken him from food stamps and welfare to being the CEO of a multi-million-dollar company.  He has authored several books on success including The LOGIC of Success, which focuses in on why some people are successful at what they do while others continue to struggle.

Also featured will be Robert Jackson, a former player for the Minnesota Vikings and author of No More Excuses, Black Men Stand Up! and No More Excuses: The Workbook.  Following his NFL career, Mr. Jackson returned to Indianapolis where he has remained deeply rooted in his commitment to serve his community. Mr. Jackson’s motto is, “If you’re not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.”

The students will also take part in group discussions in order to identify strategies that will help increase their chance of success.
