Slimming medications that work! And here’s the proof.

April 12, 2011 - PRLog -- A study published in the Lancet this week has shown that a drug called Qnexa can help patients lose weight.  The report is based on just under 2500 patients who were given different treatments and assessed to see the amount of weight they lost.  This study was conducted across 93 centres in the United States.

The key ingredients of Qnexa are a combination of Phentermine and Topiramate, Phentermine is an appetite suppressant that is currently used by some specialist weight loss clinics.  It has Food and Drug Adminstration approval in the US for short term use in weight loss.  Topiramate is an anti-epileptic medication which has also been shown previously to reduce weight. 

The study compared a low and high dose of Qnexa with a placebo (drug with no active ingredient).  Under 1000 patients had placebo, 500 low dose Qnexa and 1000 high dose Qnexa.  The results of the study showed that those patients taking Qnexa had significantly more weight loss than those taking the placebo.  In fact, after 1 year those on placebo lost 1.4 kg and those on a higher dose of Qnexa lost 10.2 kg.  This was considered to be a very significant result.  In the group taking the higher dose Qnexa, 70% of patients lost at least 5% of their body weight and 48% lost more than 10% of their body weight.  This is significantly more than orlistat, which is one of currently used medications for weight loss.  The researchers reported very little in the way of significant side effects related to taking the medication.  

The reporters concluded that a combination of phentermine and topiramate, with office-based lifestyle interventions, can be valuable in the management of obesity.
