This will also be a great opportunity to celebrate our beautiful, clean beaches during the week of the one-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Please let me now if you'd be interested in talking with Chris or-we dare you-would you be up for a barefoot run?

About the Book

Chris McDougall's BORN TO RUN has become the epicenter of an international movement and one of the most successful hardcover publications in recent history. Published a year and a half ago with a modest first printing of 14,000 copies, the book has subsequently gone back to press over 30 times, now counts 425,000 copies in print and digital, and remains a bestseller.

When BORN TO RUN was first published it was by no means a sure thing: a wild narrative full of insane characters, extreme sports, jaw-dropping science, and one crazy idea-running barefoot (or as close as possible) is the answer to consistently safe, pain-free running and endurance. Against all odds, a multi-million dollar sneaker industry, some may say even against sanity, BORN TO RUN gathered steam and is now a national bestseller at the forefront of a movement. Everyone is talking about it, from the Daily Show on Comedy Central to the Christian Network's 700 Club, let alone any running magazine, forum and blog in sight. Even Nike has felt the pressure to respond to the surge brought on by BORN TO RUN and on a recent episode of HBO's Real Sports, which featured Chris McDougall and the story of his quest, Nike did-they have a new sneaker for sale, the Free Run, which mimics the experience of barefoot running. As their own promotional materials explain: "Barefoot running. Everyone's talking about how great it is, but is it truly beneficial? We think so."

A year later, BORN TO RUN is more than just a publishing success story, it is a catalyst which has truly affected a change and it all began with a simple question-Why does my foot hurt? The journey that resulted took Chris (and by a safer route, us) through Mexico's Copper Canyons to meet the Tarahumara Indians whose running technique allows them to run for hundreds of miles with minimal effort, all the while maintaining nearly perfect health and a peaceful existence-and, here's the kicker, having fun the whole time! We are also introduced to a runner who swears by running barefoot, no matter the terrain; a pair of beautiful surfer kids who prep for an ultramarathon by throwing back tequila shots; and an all-American vegan wonderboy who grew up as a geek nicknamed "Jerker." Woven throughout the narrative is Chris' growing sense (backed by cutting-edge scientific research) that human beings are-counter to what he had been told-born to run.

And today? Today, Nike's Free Run is only the latest barefoot-sneaker to hit the market, most notably following Vibram's Five Fingers, which Chris McDougall has talked about favoring in difficult terrain. The spike in sales and media coverage mirrors the rise of BORN TO RUN: http://www.google.com/trends?q=vibram+five+finger&ctab=0&...
For those of us trying to improve, not injure, our selves, Chris McDougall can offer practical advice on proper form and safety, and in this economic climate it doesn't hurt that his fitness routine is entirely free.
