April 5, 2011 - PRLog -- In a new article on her personal blog Roni Deutch explains why taxpayers should consider requesting an automatic extension, even if they intend to get their returns filed before the tax deadline.

"The deadline to file your tax return is just around the corner," says Deutch. "If you still have not filed, I highly recommend taking a minute to request an automatic 6 month extension of time to file with the IRS. Why? There’s no penalty for filing early or for asking for an extension you don’t need, but there sure is a penalty for filing late. The extension is a 'better safe than sorry' move that can save you a lot of cash!"

"To request your extension,” continues Deutch, “all you have to do is fill out and mail in Form 4868 Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return before April 18th. You can even file the extension online, day or night. It’s your right as a taxpayer to request an extension, and there is really no excuse for not getting it done. Remember that it MUST be mailed by April 18. If it’s late, the IRS will not accept it."

However, Roni warns taxpayers that this deadline extension gives you more time to file your return, not time to pay the IRS.

"When you file IRS Form 4868 you will have an additional 6 months to file your federal tax return," Deutch explains, "but if you owe more taxes, those are still due by April 18. If you are likely to owe the IRS, you should make an estimated payment, or you will be looking at late penalty fees and interest accruing each month your payment is late."
