the rush of an international expedition at home

An international expedition company, better known for its adventure training and for providing rigging support to camera crews filming in the wilds of Borneo has come up with a unique quick fix for adrenaline seeking expedition junkies that’s closer to home, the Lake District.

The monsterous mountains and fearful landscape, terms used by early Lake District explorers to warn people of the dangers of the area, has inspired international expedition organisers Fieldskills to set up a Lakes expedition taking people off the beaten track and away from the area’s usual tourist haunts.

Over the weekend expedition junkies who love to talk expeditions, watch every new adventure travel program that comes out and want to learn new skills for being in the mountains or overseas travel, will be able to wild camp in hammocks, perfect navigation skills, deal with emergency scenarios and quiz highly experienced expedition staff.

Fieldskills UK based director, Dominic Hall, said: “We work with groups all over the world providing unique expedition training but we thought it was about time we brought some of these skills to exploring the amazing places on our doorstep like the Lakes. The aim of this weekend expedition is to learn new skills, provide a challenge of setting up your own unsupported camp in the woods followed by a reasonably taxing trek on the Sunday. It is not just for the super fit and adventurous, it is designed to be a fun and very different way to spend a weekend. Also if you are considering one of our longer overseas expeditions it's the perfect chance to get a feel for what we do, pick up some skills and chat about the trips.”

The cost of the weekend (running from Friday to Sunday evening) is £150. Places are available on weekends in May (20-22) and Sept (16-18). For further details visit www.fieldskills.co.uk

Notes to Editors: itinerary details

Friday night - Arrive on the Friday evening at our unique site in a little visited corner of the Lakes. An informal camp fire dinner will be available for those who can arrive in time. The camp will be based around a beautiful yurt - you are welcome to curl up inside to sleep or bring a tent if you fancy a bit more privacy. The evening will be a good opportunity to chat around the camp fire, drink tea and meet our expedition staff and other fellow expeditioners.

2/2 rush of an international expedition at home

Saturday - After a short walk we will concentrate on setting up our jungle campsite. We'll focus on a jungle environment learning about hammocks and bashas, and tropical camping skills though we will discuss the cross over with skills for other environments. You will learn how to safely use a machete to prepare firewood, and use that skill to build a fire and cook dinner. You will build a basic parachute shelter as a social area for the evening. Time allowing we will learn some lost and search skills, navigation in the forest and skills which will help with the expedition day on Sunday. You will put up your jungle hammock and basha, learning about life in the rainforest from our expert jungle expedition leaders and spend the evening enjoying the fruits of your labours with dinner over the open fire and a (hopefully) comfy night in your hammock.
Sunday - We'll get an early start (normally guaranteed by the night in your hammock!) and head off into the Lakes - we'll look at navigation, using GPS, managing emergencies in the field, lost and search procedures and head towards the beautiful Lake Coniston for a basic picnic lunch. We'll look at river crossings, safety on and around water before heading back to our original starting point for you to head off home
