April 5, 2011 - PRLog -- SCOTTSDALE -- SimonMed Imaging is pleased to announce that it is one of the first healthcare providers in the United States to offer 3D Breast Tomosynthesis -- a breakthrough technology developed by Hologic, Inc. designed to revolutionize how breast cancer is detected today. Appointments are now being taken for its launch at the SimonMed Scottsdale location near Fashion Square Mall in May.

“Tomosynthesis is a great addition to our all Digital Mammography sites at SimonMed Imaging,” says Dr. John Simon, founder of SimonMed. “This ground-breaking and superior technology will help us find cancers earlier and will decrease the call backs for additional studies.”

This recently FDA-approved technology supplants 2-D mammography with 3-D computer enhanced images which provide a clearer picture of the breast tissue, eliminating distortion commonly caused by tissue shadowing or density which may hide lesions or cause benign areas to appear suspicious. Traditional mammograms produce 2D imaging, while the tomosynthesis mammograms allow both 2D and 3D screening all under one brief compression. The high-definition technology makes for superior digitized images allowing comparison of the images to the current and prior mammograms easier and faster. The combined X-ray dose is safely below the FDA’s recommended screening guidelines for mammography, and there is no added cost for the exam.

The technology is considered by breast experts to be the biggest breakthrough in breast cancer detection in the last 30 years. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics indicate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The stage at which breast cancer is detected influences a woman’s chance of survival. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent, according to the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Simon says appointments are now being taken for May at the Scottsdale facility located at 6740 E. Camelback Rd. Rollout to other SimonMed locations will follow. For more information about 3D mammography or to schedule an appointment, call 480.399.9808 or visit www.simonmed.com.
