Follow on Google News | Young Fashion Designer to Debut Her First Collection At North Carolina State UniversityJoelle Purifoy is a sophomore at NC State University in the College of Textiles. She is competing in the 14th annual fashion expose sponsored by the University's African American Textile Society, called "Carolinas' Next Top Designer".
By: Pamela R Purifoy Joelle has always had a love of art. She states that she randomly became interested in fashion design back in middle school. "My interest developed over time, and fashion became my favorite art medium. I began sewing during my sophomore year at Riverside High School in Durham, and just kept taking all of the classes offered there. This past summer I took sewing classes at Haberman's Fabric Store in Royal Oak, Michigan, and learned more techniques." The upcoming competition has led Joelle to harness the expertise of her sister, Gabrielle Purifoy who is a film student at UNC School of the Arts. "My sister Gabby has done my promotional videos for my fashion blog, and I'm hoping that she can assist me with lighting design at the show, and the mixing of the music for the show's production." Overall, Joelle recognizes the power of branding, and has created t-shirts advertising her fashion blog. They were created in time for the fashion competition, so that her friends and family can wear them during the event. "My goal from this competition is to be recognized as someone that is very talented when it comes to making stylish, quality clothes." The judges will make the ultimate decision, whether intricately detailed fashion designs have what it takes to win.
