FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Local service dog to help autistic child

AURORA, Illinois – April 1, 2011 – A local family has been fund-raising to get their son an autism service dog.  Erik Bailey, 7, was diagnosed with low-functioning autism, sensory integration, and seizure disorder in 2008.  The family has been struggling both financially and physically to address the special needs brought on by the disorder.  Through a bowl-a-thon and candy bar sale, they have managed to raise enough money to purchase a service dog.

Toriano Sanzone, local trainer, will be preparing the autism service dog for the Bailey family.  Through a combination of intensive training, and positive energy therapy, the dog will assist in keeping track of Erik’s location, alerting the family during or even before a seizure, and helping his overall social development.

“I believe getting this dog for Erik will really help him to have a more fulfilling, somewhat normal life.  For him and for us.  This means everything to our family,” said mother Stacie Bailey.  Since Erik could walk, it has been a struggle to keep him from trying to get out of the house.  They must constantly keep the doors locked and repair locks when they are broken.  “Erik is fascinated by doors, windows, locks, garage doors, elevators.  He just loves these things,” she added.

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder effecting nearly 1% of children today.  The disorder hinders social development, creates communication difficulties, causes repetitive behaviors, and often brings on seizures.  Though there has been an increase in autism awareness over the past few years, there is still a tremendous amount that is not known about the disorder.  While there is no known cure, there are many programs and other tools that can improve the life of a child with autism, including a professionally trained service dog.

“It really means a lot to me that they have entrusted us with this task,” commented trainer Sanzone. “They could have gone to any trainer in Chicago.  I look forward to the opportunity to help improve the life of this child.
