March 31, 2011 - PRLog -- While inclusion in the Cambridge Who’s Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who’s Who membership.

More than a medical practitioner, Dr. O’Brien is a public servant. He has devoted the last 16 years to enriching communities across New York City through medical missions in underserved areas and free surgical services to members of the New York Police Department. He is the eponymous host of Ask Dr. Tommy O, a cable television program through which he educates patients and health care providers alike on various medical issues. The program was honored with four Beta Awards for Best Health Education Show — a recognition that reinforces Dr. O’Brien’s Humanitarian Award for Health Care Excellence.

Noted for his ability to explain complex medical problems in simple terms, Dr. O’Brien has taken his act to radio and the public speaking circuit as well. He has been featured as a guest on various local radio stations and has presented lectures on Long Island, focusing his discussions on health-related topics such as Medicare and nutrition.

Dr. O’Brien, who is proud to be a native New Yorker, helped establish a triage center in 2001 for September 11th survivors at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. He continues to serve his beloved city as a commander in the New York Guard, in charge of the 88th Brigade of the 102nd Forward Medical Support Detachment. He has been honored twice with the New York Guard Operations Support Medal. Dr. O’Brien shares his passion for the Big Apple with his sister and frequent collaborator, TracieLyn Ann O'Brien-Rydzewski, who resides in Oregon but has not lost her New York roots. She volunteers frequently in Dr. O’Brien’s outreach programs and also designed the Ask Dr. Tommy O website.

Dr. O'Brien received a Doctor of Osteopathy from Des Moines University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. He earned a master’s degree in clinical nutrition and a bachelor’s degree in biology, both from the New York Institute of Technology, and an associate degree in biology from Nassau Community College. He is certified in emergency management through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Dr. O’Brien is affiliated with the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, and the United States Amateur Boxing Association, for whom he serves as a ringside physician.
