FEWER, SMALLER AND LESS EXPENSIVE
Despite gypsies and royals, trends are for smaller weddings
Following yesterday’s announcement of the provisional number for marriages registered in England and Wales in 2009 by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which shows a continuation of a gradual decline, Hitched.co.uk, the UK's leading wedding website, has revealed that in its survey of weddings in 2010 there is a decrease in wedding budgets and a trend for inviting less guests.
The survey was sent to Hitched.co.uk registered users who gave their wedding dates for 2010. The survey attracted over 500 respondents most of which were brides.
According to the survey results, wedding budgets have decreased since last year, with a 5% decrease in people budgeting between £5,000 and £15,000. The results also show that couples paying for their own wedding have risen by 1% in the last year, as the bride’s family paying for the whole day has decreased by 1%.
As well as this, the 2010 survey revealed that couples are inviting less people to their wedding compared to the 2009 results and the number of people inviting 50 to 100 guests has decreased by 7%, whereas the number of people inviting less than 50 guests has risen by 3%.
Dean Yardley, managing director of Hitched.co.uk, said: “Obviously in 2010 recessionary pressures might have impacted on wedding budgets and from our annual research this is the second subsequent year we recorded a decrease. So despite several hours of TV programmes dedicated to weddings and the forthcoming royal event, the average UK wedding is shrinking in size and expenditure.
“With websites such as Hitched.co.uk there are now free planning tools available and couples can choose from a much increased range of options to suit their budget. From the feedback we receive on our forum, we know that being able to ask the advice of other couples planning weddings, can result in significant savings.”
