Let’s face it, most of the time our children don’t think we really know what we’re talking about.  So when the author of The Peak Interview (http://www.amazon.com/dp/145056894
7) got a call from his daughter looking for advice on her upcoming job interview, he was surprised and delighted.

His daughter was going to have a screening phone interview for a job she really wanted.
He knew his daughter had read The Peak Interview.  Rather than overwhelm her with lots of advice, he told her simply to be herself, to stand while on the phone and smile while she talked and listened.

The phone interview was a success and led to a face-to-face interview.  Likewise, she called her father before that interview and asked for tips.  This time he went over the four questions in the book and suggested she only ask the questions she was comfortable with, and only if they seemed appropriate at the time.

After her interview she called back.  He asked if she’d used any of the questions.  She hesitated a moment the said she’d asked the Bonus question* and the Peak/End question**.

“Why did you hesitate?” The author asked.
“Well, I didn’t feel that comfortable in the interview to just ask the questions.”  She replied.  “So I told the hiring manager that my father had written a book about interviewing and I am supposed to ask specific questions.  Well, the hiring manager laughed and told me to fire away.  Which I did.  He said he thought they were great questions.  At the end of the interview he thought it was perhaps the best interview he’d ever conducted.  He then said I would probably be getting an offer letter next week.”

Well, she got the offer letter and she’s over the moon!
So is her father.

* The Bonus Question: “Suppose you hired me and I’d just completed the first year.  Imagine that my accomplishments have been outstanding.   What have I done in that first year to achieve such a performance?”
** The Peak/End Question: “I am keen to work in an environment where a person can make a noticeable difference.  In that line, I would love it if you tell me about a time when working here that you were able to do something special, something significant, something you are proud of.”
