March 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Monique Coleman, star of the High School Musical movies, was the VIP guest at Shrewsbury International School Bangkok in March.

Monique visited in her role as United Nations Youth Champion for the International Year of Youth.

The actress, who played Taylor McKessie, gave an inspirational and thought-provoking presentation to students in years 12 and 13 about the tough issues that teenagers face every day in both the developed and developing world. She told Shrewsbury students about how she was forced to sleep on the floor and struggled to make ends meet when she left drama school but she achieved her dream of becoming an actress through self belief and perseverance.

She then went to visit some young fans in the Junior School who screamed and cheered when she arrived. Mr Stephen Holroyd, Principal of Shrewsbury International School Bangkok, was delighted to welcome the star to the school. “Monique Coleman is a truly inspirational role model for young people and is using her celebrity as a force for good. We were honoured that she was able to visit us and wish her the continuing success in both her work with the UN and in her acting career.”

Monique is currently on a world tour as part of her UN role to see examples of youth in action and to try to help connect young people in developing countries to those in the developed world. She arrived in Thailand from Japan where she was visiting when the earthquake struck. After Bangkok she travelled on to Bangladesh.

Monique has been a longtime advocate for improving the rights and well-being of young people, and is using her position to let UN officials know all the good that the youth of the world are doing.

"I am extremely passionate about youth and want to highlight the amazing ways they are already making a difference," she says. “It's important to see what the youth in the developing countries and the less-developed ones are doing in order to create dialogue and mutual understanding.”

Last September, Monique launched an internet talk show called Gimme Mo which cover topics such as youth homelessness, body image, sex and drugs.
