Volkswagen Cup Dazzles 70 Million

The Volkswagen Cup gains a TV audience of 70 million.

March 28, 2011 - PRLog -- The Volkswagen Cup is proving to be a smash hit for TV spectators, with phenomenal viewing figures of 70 million over the two days competition in southern city of Guangzhou, China.

These figures are even more impressive when you consider they only represent the audience achieved by CCTV and the local Guangzhou Channel, in China.

The event will provide even greater exposure for the sport and its sponsor Volkswagen, with the footage set to be distributed globally, and is also available on the ITTF's onDemand channel - www.ittf.com/itTV

Adham Sharara, ITTF President, said:

"I am very impressed and pleasantly surprised at the overwhelming response of the TV viewers in China to the Volkswagen Cup this year."

"We have exceeded all expectations with 70 million tuning into watch the event, on CCTV and Guangzhou TV."

"This proves that this is a very popular event and once again highlights the excellent exposure table tennis can provide its sponsors, in this case Volkswagen."

For CCTV the Volkswagen Cup broke new ground, surpassing the average audience figures since last September for the Thursday night slot by 13 percent.

In total the competition was aired for an impressive eight hours on CCTV, with 6.33 million tuning into the women's final and 8.46 million for the men's.

The Volkswagen Cup is an invitational event with a selected blend of eight men and eight women players from the upper echelons of the world rankings, each vying to be crowned a VW Cup Champion.

With the limit of only one player per country it makes for an enthralling and truly unique event. This was the third Volkswagen Cup; a competition created to provide the ITTF an opportunity to showcase new innovative ideas that enhance the way the sport is portrayed to spectators, both at the venue and on television.
