Overseas Dental Crowns - Dental Care
Did you know that next time you visit your Brisbane Dentist you have greater than 1 in 3 chance of your Dental Crown being made overseas? Just because you visit a Dentist in Australia doesn’t mean you are receiving Australian Dental Care.
It is not fair that a patient of a dentist is not aware of this. It is a clear breach of ethical 'informed consent' says Dr Paul McKay. Dr Paul McKay proposes a legislative change which would make it mandatory for all Dentists to inform to a patient whether any part of their Dental Work is being constructed overseas.
What you find in different countries and cultures is different standards and invariably the purchaser suffers. Cheaper materials, cheaper labour, and shorter time frames are leading to this change in the market. It is actually killing off the Australia Dental Laboratory industry, and whilst the Dentists are making increasing profits, the savings are not always passed onto the patient who lives with a lower quality product, with an often reduced life-span. Recent Laboratory surveys in Brisbane reveal that over 40% (over 1 in 3) of Crowns are being sent overseas to be made.
"If I was the patient, I would expect to be asked if I would like my dental crown or denture made outside of Australia. Then I am informed. It is not right to not let the public know their dental crown is to be made overseas" says Dr Paul McKay. The only present restriction involves the Dentist knowing the exact materials used in the crown. I have seen a patient that had a Nickel allergy to recently inserted crownwork in Brisbane. Tested this showed to be a very high component. It required immediate removal and replacement. It has been common practice to not use metals such as nickel in Dental Crowns for many years.
This situation would have been avoided should a Dentist take more interest in the materials used. "Dental Laboratory Work is all about precision, and when costs are cut, things such as the fit of the crown are not as accurate. A poor fitting crown will last only a few years as the greatest cause for crown failure is due to decay around the margins."
Smile Artistry believes it is time for an Australian Standard and time for the patients to start searching for Australian Made Dentistry as the only standard. Similar legislative changes are being asked for in the United States.
Next time you go to the Dentist, ask where is my crown being made?
