March 27, 2011 - PRLog -- SMOAKS, SC, July 21, 2010—A rugged outdoorswoman, Edna B. Carroll adheres to a motto whose very language illustrates her favorite setting and pastime. It was originated by Ralph Waldo Emerson, a fellow nature-lover: “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail.” Not content with carving a single path for herself, however, she instead forged trails in multiple fields. A true “Jane of all trades,” Ms. Carroll stood at the helm of two businesses over the course of her varied 29-year career: Carroll Management Company, Inc., an accounting firm, and Graham & Carroll Shooting Preserve, a white-tailed deer hunting preserve located on her own expansive farm.

She began her career, perhaps not surprisingly, in a discipline quite different from these enterprises. After completing an EMT resuscitation course, she joined Colleton County EMS. She worked out of a rural area, where she discovered a dire need for accounting, notary and other administrative services. Thus inspired to make her own way, Ms. Carroll established her eponymous accounting firm. Her founding of Graham & Carroll Shooting Preserve in 1982, on the other hand, resulted from resources that were already in abundance. The mistress of a 5,000-acre farm that specialized in crop production and pine timber, she saw room for yet another venture: deer hunting. “There were so many deer. If you were to come around at night, you would probably see 75 to 80 in one field,” she explained. Passionate about farming and hunting, she is deeply proud to have kept her property afloat despite economic troubles. This is the legacy that she plans to leave to her four grandsons.

The most hands-on of owners, Ms. Carroll relishes performing her daily responsibilities on the grounds, from planting wildlife habitat patches to driving a tractor and checking the timber of 2,250 acres of pine. “I’ve lived on a farm all my life,” she said, matter-of-factly. Her life in the outdoors influenced more than her business interests. A soul that has been touched by nature is often moved to pay tribute to its beauty, and Ms. Carroll chose to write about it. “I write mainly about nature, the forest and animals. I think that’s appropriate because…I have to attend to those 5,000 acres and it just gets in my blood,” she said. She has since published a collection of poetry and an autobiographical story of a child growing up on a farm, entitled “Rum Gully Roots.” Presently completing her third book, Ms. Carroll has always found nature to be a generous muse. “I can be riding down a road and a subject will come up and I have to pull off to the side [to] capture the words,” she shared. “It can be on a napkin, I’ve even written on my arm – the neighbors in this little neighborhood, if they see me pull over, they know I’m capturing some words to put in a poem.”

More than a successful businesswoman and a prolific writer, Ms. Carroll prefers to be known in her community as a good neighbor. She takes pride in her hard work and often shares the fruits of her labor with others. “I married into a more well-to-do family, [but] the experience of being poor has shaped my life. I was born basically in poverty, which gives my heart a humble feeling when I know of anybody who needs anything,” she said. “I’m a farm girl, and a friend…I’m there to help. I love what I do, and that’s the story of my life.”
