March 27, 2011 - PRLog -- Margaret Spence, author of From Workers Comp Claimant to Valued Employee and CEO of Douglas Claims & Risk Consultants, Inc. has been selected as the closing keynote speaker for the Inaugural Manasota Diversity Conference. The conference will give business executives the opportunity to discover strategic business value in having a diverse, inclusive and well-balanced workforce. The Manasota Diversity Conference will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at the Manatee Convention and Civic Center in Manatee, Florida.

The goal of the conference is to create programs and activities relevant to 21st century life, which means including all races, learning how to use the changes in global demographics as opportunities, learning how to realign strategies to maximize performance and to discover the strategic business value of having a well-balanced, inclusive and diverse workforce.  This is the first diversity conference of its kind in a four-county area: Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte and DeSoto.

Ms. Spence’s presentation: Smart Women Must Take Bold Risk – Defining Diversity and Success for Women Leaders. Her presentation will focus on five core areas: Creating paths to success, moving from the executive room to the board room, using intuition as a guide, defining key role models and giving back. This Jamaican born entrepreneur will interweave her life growing up in the United States while keeping a strong grounded view of her Caribbean heritage. She will outline how the motto of Jamaica, "Out of Many One People" exemplifies how and what diversity should look like. She will also focus on the glass ceiling that exist for women leaders and how we can move around, through and shatter the stereotypical view preventing women from achieving true leadership roles.

Spence says, women business leaders must recognize that they can create their own path – there is still room to be a pioneer. In this economy, complacency and fear cannot be the cornerstone that prevents us from achieving success. We must be flexible, agile and willing to accept the fact that where we start out may not be where we end up. In addition, Margaret adds, “Unless we see success no one else will – we must be comfortable with who we are and our role models have to start with us. When I look in the mirror my role model is looking back at me.”

The Manasota Diversity conference will include 12 educational sessions, sponsored by companies such as Suncoast Workforce, Tidewell Hospice, Fifth Third Bank, State College of Florida, the City of North Port, TV Media Net, the City of Sarasota and the Latino Community Network. Continuing education units (CEUs) will be awarded in certain areas such as social services, health services and human resources. The conference will end with a networking reception.
