March 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Blossoming almond tree is one of Van Gogh’s most beautiful painting and one that today is renowned among the most popular oil painting reproductions.  It was painted in Saint-Rémy, France in February of 1890, this painting was created in the last year of Vincent’s life.  Originally painted as a gift for his brother Theo’s newborn son, Almond Blossom, shown here, is an oil on canvas painting inspired by Japanese prints with a blue background and almond branches covered in blossoms in the foreground.

The painting exudes positive feelings which was the specific intention of the artist. The gift was carefully chosen as a bright, upbeat work with almond blossoms to represent the new born and inspire hope for the future. This positive vibe still strikes a chord today, which is the reason for this painting becoming so much loved. Vincent would always turn to his art when trying to give across his emotions and gratitude to others in his life. No-one had a greater impact on, or did more for Vincent than Theo and he was well aware of this. Despite their common squabbles and problems each very much loved each other and wanted the best for their brother.

Van Gogh wrote the following in a letter to his mother from February 20 after by the birth of his nephew,, 1890,

“I imagine that, like me, your thoughts are much with Jo and Theo: how glad I was when the news came that it had ended well: it was a good thing that Wil stayed on. I should have greatly preferred him to call the boy after Father, of whom I have been thinking so much these days, instead of after me; but seeing it has now been done, I started right away to make a picture for him, to hang in their bedroom, big branches of white almond blossom against a blue sky.”

Theo named the newborn Vincent after his brother, and Vincent seemed quite proud to share this painting with him as it was a symbol of new life and the coming of spring.  In a letter to his brother Theo from March 15 of 1890 Van Gogh wrote,

“My work was going well, the last canvas of branches in blossom – you will see that it was perhaps the best, the most patiently worked thing I had done, painted with calm and with a greater firmness of touch.”

Blossoming almond tree is also a good example of how Van Gogh tried to studying Japanese art and how it began to appear in many of Van Gogh Paintings. His main experience of Japanese art had been in Paris where much existed and many other artists had similarly been interested in it both before the career of Vincent, and afterwards. The painting sits alongside around 3 or 4 others as key works from this Dutch master which followed a very close style of Japanese print styles and colours, particularly the Japanese wooden blocks which were brought to the attention of many painters around this time.

Today Almond Blossom can be seen at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and if you love this painting, you can some art reproductions instead, pretty good for home decor.
