March 21, 2011 - PRLog -- On Sunday, April 17, 2011, the Birmingham-Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra (BBSO) concludes its 2010-2011 Concert Season, "For the Love of Music," with an evening of music inspired from or about America in "From the New World," conducted by Charles Greenwell. The benefit concert will feature a special performance by violist and BBSO 2011 Young Artist String Competition Winner Abigail Elder.  The BBSO concert will take place at Groves High School at 7:00 p.m. A silent auction will take place prior to the concert and during intermission.

The concert From the New World will open with Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, composed in 1942 as one of a series of wartime fanfares commissioned by British composer and conductor Eugene Goossens.  Following this piece is Massachusetts-born composer Alan Hovhaness’ Symphony No. 2, Op. 132: Mysterious Mountain. Young Artist Abigail Elder will then perform Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, Mvt. 1 by William Walton with the orchestra.  Walton was twenty-six when he wrote this work, first performed in 1929. Following intermission will be Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95: From the New World. A celebrated Czech composer, Dvořák was the toast of New York City by the time he wrote From the New World in 1893. Teaching at the National Conservatory, he sought to help his students build an American national music.  To that end, he wove into his “New World” symphony a number of references to American melodies - particularly spirituals like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Goin'  Home.”

Tickets are $27 for adults (children 18 and under are free).  Advance tickets can be purchased by calling 248-352-BBSO or by visiting www.bbso.org.  Tickets may also be purchased at the door.
